Celebrating Occupational Therapy Month with Aequor

Every April, we recognize Occupational Therapy Month—a time to celebrate the invaluable contributions of occupational therapists (OTs) and occupational therapy assistants (OTAs) across the country. These professionals are the unsung heroes of healthcare, helping individuals achieve independence, rebuild confidence, and live life to the fullest.

At Aequor, we are proud to support OTs and OTAs by offering exciting travel opportunities that align with their expertise and passion for helping others. This month, we’re shining a spotlight on their work and the many ways they transform lives.

What Is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy (OT) is a client-centered healthcare profession focused on enabling people of all ages to perform the everyday activities—or “occupations”—that give their lives meaning. These activities can range from self-care tasks like dressing and eating to work, education, social participation, and leisure pursuits.

When injury, illness, developmental delays, or disabilities interfere with daily functioning, occupational therapists step in to help patients restore skills, adapt environments, and build confidence. Rather than treating a condition in isolation, OTs take a holistic approach—looking at the whole person and their unique challenges and goals.

Occupational therapists work with a wide variety of patients, including:

  1. Children with developmental delays or sensory processing disorders
  2. Adults recovering from strokes or orthopedic injuries
  3. Seniors managing arthritis, dementia, or fall prevention
  4. Individuals with mental health conditions or chronic illnesses

OTs use evidence-based interventions, therapeutic exercises, adaptive equipment, and environmental modifications to promote independence. Their goal is always to empower individuals to participate fully in the activities that are most important to them. Read more about advancements in OT in this Aequor Blog Post.

Occupational therapy is as diverse and dynamic as the people it serves. It bridges the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social aspects of well being—and helps patients not only recover, but helps them thrive.

Where Do Occupational Therapists Work?

One of the most exciting aspects of a career in occupational therapy is the wide variety of settings in which you can work. OTs and OTAs are vital members of care teams in healthcare, educational, and community-based environments.

Here are some of the most common settings where occupational therapists make an impact:

Hospitals

In both acute care and rehabilitation hospitals, OTs help patients recover from surgery, strokes, injuries, or serious illnesses. The focus is on early intervention, restoring function, and preparing patients to return home or transition to another level of care.

Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs)

OTs in SNFs support elderly residents or those with chronic conditions in regaining independence. They often work with patients recovering from hip replacements, fractures, or neurological conditions like Parkinson’s or dementia.

Home Health

OTs provide therapy directly in patients’ homes, tailoring interventions to their daily environment. Home health OTs play a critical role in reducing hospital readmissions, improving quality of life, and supporting safe aging in place.

Schools and Early Intervention Programs

Pediatric OTs help children succeed in school by supporting sensory integration, handwriting skills, attention, motor coordination, and self-regulation. They collaborate closely with teachers, parents, and other professionals to meet IEP goals.

Mental Health Facilities

In psychiatric hospitals or outpatient mental health programs, OTs help individuals build routines, manage emotions, and develop life skills that support recovery and reintegration into the community.

Outpatient Clinics

Many OTs work in hand therapy clinics or outpatient rehabilitation centers, addressing orthopedic injuries, repetitive strain, post-operative recovery, or neurological rehab.

Travel Assignments (with Aequor!)

Travel occupational therapy is perfect for adventurous professionals who want to explore different work environments and geographic locations. Travel OTs can choose short term assignments in any of the above settings while earning competitive pay and gaining diverse clinical experience.
